From Human Rights Rhetoric to Street Protests: ICE Shooting Raises Alarming Questions in the US

Trump’s Immigration Policy Turns into a Major Headache as ICE Shooting Sparks Nationwide Outrage

Former US President Donald Trump’s immigration policy is increasingly turning into a major political and moral challenge, as the United States—often seen lecturing the world on human rights—now finds itself under intense scrutiny.

According to a report published by Al Jazeera, federal immigration agents (ICE/Border Patrol) shot and killed a 37-year-old American citizen, Alex Jeffrey Pretty, in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026. The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with people taking to the streets in protest.

This is not the first such case. Earlier, another US citizen, Renee Nicole Good, was also fatally shot by an ICE agent, further escalating public anger over the conduct of federal immigration forces.

Alex Pretty was an ICU nurse and a US citizen, with no serious criminal background reported so far. Multiple eyewitness accounts and viral videos suggest that he was recording the officers on his mobile phone during the protest and was attempting to assist others when the situation turned violent.

Federal agents, however, claim that Pretty was armed with a pistol and allegedly warned officers to drop their weapons, forcing them to open fire.

In contrast, local residents and family members strongly dispute this version. They argue that video footage clearly shows Pretty holding only a mobile phone in his hands. According to them, he had already fallen to the ground before shots were fired.

Republican Senator Calls for Probe

Reacting to the incident, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana described the shooting as “deeply disturbing” and said it has raised serious questions about the credibility of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE.

Senator Cassidy demanded a full federal and state-level investigation to ensure transparency and to uncover the truth for the American public.

His remarks indicate that even members of the Republican Party are beginning to distance themselves from the official narrative presented by the US administration, highlighting growing political unease over immigration enforcement tactics.
